I'm also happy to help with logo/graphics/etc. I'm not sure if anyone remember my icon pack but I promise I've come a long way since then.

And if you are making Sony a mod on either site you can count me out of joining.

well I think it's good enough to open, been working really hard trying to get it up and running as quick as possible.
http://openhandhelds.net/
made the site ad free and clean as possible, supports tapatalk if you have an android or iOS device, installed and hosting a wiki..
any donations are very welcome and every penny donated will be used to improve the site and service
let me know what you think
Why are you doing this?
You are probably just trying to help, but do you realize ED is already planning to move the site and owns openhandhelds.org.
Seriously this just looks like a desperate attempt to get attention, why not wait for ED to build something official.
I appreciate your effort, but better help ED with that, than roll your own.

I think there are things wrong with all the communities I frequent, I spend 90% of my time in "other consoles" and I think that was a problem. I tried to provide an option that is unbiased to any certain handheld.... also clean and resourceful. If you don't think it will be useful then nobody is forcing your hand. That's all I'm going to say about that.
If a mod doesn't act professionally then they wont be a mod anymore, from what ive seen he doesn't abuse is power on op boards so I agreed.

View it anyway you want, I am only providing it as an option. Cant force the Internet in any direction
Not totally true. I am pretty sure if you don't have posting members the site will be shutdown in a few years. TBH I don't see how you will manage to make the site more popular then EDs'.
That said, I like a really impartial site with information regarding open handhelds.
Waiting for content and then I (might) register.

I agree, no reason to jump ship when there is no reason for this site to disappear.I would rather wait for evilD to come back with a more news than join this openhandhelds.net that may not get the gp32x backup. Also any donations should go to evilD for all the stellar work he does with the file archives and previous history of being an all round scene good guy and internet topbloke.
It is perhaps true that this site is rather specialised in the consoles it covers, but it is infact that way by design. A very unfocussed site with subsections for every system under the sun is not likely to be particularly viable. This is because it would essentially be a number of fragmented smaller communities that would probably be better served by dedicated sites.I think there are things wrong with all the communities I frequent, I spend 90% of my time in "other consoles" and I think that was a problem. not really trying to compete with ED's site, I was trying to complement it.. or at least that's what the plan was when I registered the domain.. the forum on .org is in german... and I wanted an english one that was similar and had a wider selection of devices... see my train of thought? Maybe talking about it here (while it seemed directly applicable to the situation) may not have been the best idea.. not very warmly taken.
I don't agree. See XDA developers.

this was my thought exactly
Anyway just want you all to know I'm not profiting even in the slightest bit from doing any of this... no ads, no store... just content.. and I paid quite a bit out of pocket already for this idea and figured you guys would like it. If it ever does pull a profit I'm just going to upgrade the bandwith and get more storeage to host more stuff and finish some of the other stuff I've been working on... so you're all welcome
I'm going to go back to my hole now, if you need me, you know where to find me.

So we can move gp32x.com to the new server and keep the address as well
Also, he's fine with anything we want to improve and he's looking for his IPB login details.
So I'm going to move the site to the new server, will upgrade the IPB license and add IP.Downloads and we can work on improving things.
Forum layout, news, etc.
Whatever good ideas you get

Even though the URL is now safe, I still like the idea of catering to a wider range of hardware, and flying it all under the Open Handhelds banner. A web ring of sorts. Some ideas on that:
- "GP32X" becomes "GP32X, home of open handhelds." This is reflected in the branding of the home page & forum header.
- openhandhelds.org becomes a landing page for all sites: File archives, GP32X, German forums, Pandora/iCP forums.
- All these sites link back to openhandhelds.org (just in the footer text or something).
I see that 'forum.openhandhelds.org' is prominent in google results; it needs a banner explaining that it's an archive only, with links to the active forums.
[edit] Also, links from the the file archives back to the forums might increase community activity. For example a 'support' link on each app entry, pointing to the relevant forum section. I guess IP.Downloads will do something along these lines or better.

Also the fact that Hando is the owner of a site he doesn't care about anymore doesn't sound good to me for future developments.

I was assuming that there would be a transfer of domain name ownership to ED... hopefully that's the case.
I hope so, but even if he does I still think openhandheld.org is a better domain name and a transfer would be wise. Luckily there is no need to rush anything now.
