...Well, no I havent, but some people have, and what's their perfect moment?
This is where they post that they have their Gp2xs in order to fill some void in their souls.
D.C.
Yeah, everybody who gets his gp2x should post here if he wants, instead of creating the same topic. This topic should be pinnen though.

the magic moment for me was twofold xD

1. opening the packaging to reveal the lovely gp2x box happy.gif

2. putting on the screen protector properly and getting a really nice shiny display biggrin.gif

The greatest moment for me was when I finally managed to unbrick my gp2x after failed firmware upgrading. The second greatest was when I opened the gp2x's case and could to make it into one piece again (and fixing some things in the way). The another fine whiles were those when I got Python running and could compile C executable (thought I didn't get full grip on it yet). Yep - the Castaway - another excellent thing to have on the gp2x!

What else? Future will be interesting as very exciting things may show. There is steady (and quite fast!) progress in every aspect of gp2x. Soon we will have first excellent commercial games from Int13 too.

It's all very impressive for such "obscure" machine like the gp2x!

yay i got mine too *joins the gang*

I just replaced my old one (after being stolen). I orderered it from Play-Asia Friday afternoon, and it arrived Monday lunch. That's fast from HK to Canberra.

Considering it's a massive holiday in China. and I didn't think the post moved on the weekend.

Everything is just as kickarse as before. Could be the same unit. I haven't tested if it overclocks to 300mhz solidly like my previuos one.

I really miss my energizers, I get an hour instead of 5 house on my powerbase. But I've got 8 entergzers in the mail, so that should last 20 hours.

Anyway, I'll start dev'ing for the GP2X again soon. Moral is lifting again. smile.gif

I ordered mine from from gbax.com last week, and i`m still waiting. I got an email stating that theyhave just recieved a new batch of GPX2`s and they are currently in the process of testing them. I may cancel my order if it doesn`t arrive by next week.

Oh feck! Is that why it is taking so long. They should have given me an email to tell me!

Can we make this the "I Got My GP2X/I already have one and have just joined the forums" topic, therefore banishing introductory topics altogether?
zektor
Well, I didn't get my GP2X yet smile.gif But, I am new to the forums and wanted to introduce myself.

I have been involved, in one way or another, to many "scenes"....from as far back as the c64, to the Amiga, Dreamcast, GBA, Tapwave Zodiac, and more recently the Nintendo DS. As you can imagine, I yearn for a dedicated mobile homebrew device, which is why I chose the GP2X. I sadly missed the whole GP32 era, and kind of regret that. The GP2X is a new start for me with a device like this, and I am sure I am going to enjoy it very much.

I have already prepared myself with a slew of emulators and homebrew stuff, and ordered a 2GB SD card as well...just to be certain I'll have the room for these goodies. Mame will most likely be the first thing I try, as I am a huge classic videogame enthusiast.

Other than that background, I am 30 years old, married with a 1 1/2 year daughter. Guess that's all!

waiting for mine to ship. for those of you who've ordered from play-asia and if you also happened to choose UPS, do you know if play-asia makes UPS get a signature? cause at my house no one is around during the day when they come.

Welcome.

As for missing the GP32 era, it's not over yet. Scan ebay for a cheap one. There is much a GP32 has to offer even if you have a GP2x.

EDIT: typos.

Welp, received my GP2X today. Boy, was I missing out! This unit is absolutely incredible! I am really enjoying this. The overall quality of the unit is really much better than I thought it would be. Pictures do it absolutely no justice. I was playing Genesis and Mame within 5 minutes after opening the box, so I see literally no real learning curve to get going with it. Fantastic.

I am wondering something however. Sometimes the screen looks like I am seeing scanlines...or some type of horizontal lines. Not a great big deal, but is this normal?

EDIT: Nevermind, a quick search yeilded a thread of some common problems. It is not even a problem really to tell you the truth.

I love the unit! I am going to have alot of fun with this one for sure! smile.gif

Welcome!

Yes. There's an LCD tweak that should fix it altogether, and it might be fixed in later firmwares.

When new firmwares appear, don't be afraid to flash your GP2X with them.
fishybawb
The scanlines don't bother me too much, certainly not to the extent of making me feel sick as someone posted here. It's weird how they're more noticeable when the unit's moving though...
zektor
Yeah, that is wierd. But, it is almost unnoticable on my end. In other words, no big deal at all. I ordered this from gp32z.com, and I thought it was wierd that it came with the latest firmware (v1.2.1) and that it seems SDL is already installed. I tested that new Wack-a-mole penguin game (which says it requires SDL) and it worked without me doing anything. I also tried to install SDL anyway to see what would happen, but it immediately returns me to the main menu (ie: no black screen while SDL installs)

I couldn't do anything wrong to the unit by trying to install SDL when it is installed already right? And one last question. DO you guys have any problem with the directory reading of the SD? Seems that the system "remembers" a previous directory structure sometimes. For example, I removed the SD, added two folders of files, reinserted it...but they aren't listed. I removed some files too, but they were STILL listed. It's like it does not refresh sometimes. Of course a quick off/on reboot fixed it up, but I was just wondering if you guys/gals experience this?

Same here, I have to be looking for them. Different people have different sensitivities to that sort of thing I guess.

Yep, it's due to the SD card not being "sync"ed after writes ie. the crappy SD driver is... well, crap. There's a script here to fix it - you have to run it manually after writing to the card:

OpenGL? Grrar! *eats OpenGLfan's face*

Sorry, I'm just very pissed off at a flash player that uses OpenGL for rendering.

Welcome to the magical world of GP2X. *gives back OpenGLfan's face*

Just been contacted and mine is expected to arrive on Monday. Hopefully given how much Wales are going to beat England by tomorrow I will still be alive after all the alcohol abuse.

great day yesterday: i run home to pick up my gp2x from the mail. then i find out that we have a new, awesome toaster, to replace our old and crappy one. so of course i made a sandwich with toast and played my gp2x. didn't get very far cause it turns out that either the SD card or my card reader is shit. got that sorted out though (kinda).

so now i am sitting here in my pj's enjoying some hot cocoa and earthbound on squidgesnes. yesterday involved playing RAW (PM me if you need the code wheel) as well as some DrMDx (sonic, cool spot - amazing platformer). currently trying to get quake and pacmame working.

daveC is absolutely right about the screen gamma...if there was a way to turn it down a bit a lot of the colors would be more saturated.

Just so that everyone knows england beat wales today by approxiametly 40- 10 (I know that is not the actual score) but anyway we whopped your arses.

Indeed we did. Even though I'm not a big fan of rugby, or any other sport for that matter, I can join all of us English in saying:

We seem to have beaten you Welsh people, what what. We shall celebrate with tea and cakes, then a good round of croquet, what what.

I ordered mine from Play-Asia a few days ago. It already shipped, but via the slow 10-day or whatever shipping. Already have 4 rechargeables and a 2GB SD card waiting for it. GAH!

Mine arrived this morning, and i have to admit that it`has some serious design flaws,IMO
Here are my gripes:

1)The Thumbstick issue is really annoying
2)The Scanline issues can be really distracting.
3)You have to fit the Protective screen yourself, WTF!

Order a cap from DaveC on the boards (PM him) - it doesn't fix the problems, but it will make the joystick MUCH more useable.

QUOTE
2)The Scanline issues can be really distracting.

I don't notice them that much, but you could try the CPU/LCD tweaker to see if that fixes the problem. I'm hoping a later firmware will correct it permanently.

QUOTE

I'm not sure that's a "design flaw"... So there's some self assembly required, it's hardly rocket science tongue.gif

Ho Ho.

Anyway, did it come?

And can you damage the unit reinstalling the SDL if it's already on there...?

One Gp2x in the bag. So much nicer than I expected, and I expected it to be nice. Real nice. Time for some MAME action...

I just recieved my GP2X. So far very impressed. Apart from the joystick - I find that I have to push the stick from the other side so that it clicks in order for left-right directions are registered. Is this the common problem?

Ordered mine last wednesday from GBAX, and it came this morning. I wasn't to impressed with it as soon as I opened the box. I was expecting it to be quite abit bigger, then I turned it on and I've been fiddling with it and I'm loving it more and more. Full Throttle looks amazing on it, and DrMD is great. Squidge SNES is pritty cool aswell.

Edit: I almost forgot to mention, Graig is so generous he included a brand new blank CD wink.gif

Lol, I just recieved an email from GBAx telling me that my GP2X has just been sent off. A bit late, since I just recieved the GP2X this morning. Ha!

It was me, but you have to differ between scanlines and interlacing (AFAIK).

Scanlines is what was making me sick, but luckily enough it can be solved by using the LCD Tweaker after every reboot as is going to be solved permanently in the new firmware.

Interlacing means the horizontal lines that are most visible when you move the unit (which is not a big problem) and during vertical scrolling (which is pretty irritating). No clue about when (if at all) this is going to be solved.

I JUST ORDERED MINE!

2-day shipping - anyone know if fedex delivers on saturdays? Otherwise I'm gonna have to wait until Monday.

Could you please let me know when you receive your unit how long it took for it to arrive and of what quality it is (comparable with units from other suppliers).

I JUST GOT MY GP2X!!!

After fiddling around a bit with it, I can't see why people are complaining about the joystick. The screen seems to flicker slightly, but I guess that's normal with LCD. Now to go around and download some emus! Any suggestions?

I Just Got My Gp2x!!!

I actually got it a few hours ago. I love it. I've been lurking for a while, reading other people's impressions, so I pretty much knew what to expect. And I'm impressed. For the most part.

*cough*

Nothing could prepare me for the joystick. I mean WOW. This thing is freaking HORRIBLE. I didn't expect it to be this bad. I'll order a replacement from DaveC real soon. Further disappointment came when I couldn't play MPEG4 files.

Listened to music for most of the day, then tried out SquidgeSNES, which works pretty damn great. Haven't touched any other emulators, though I certainly plan to - especially gnuboy and DrMDx.

When all's said and done, I'm proud to be a GP2X owner.

Edit (Didn't really want to make a new post):
I'm playing Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins now with gnuboy. Holy crap. It runs like a champ at 266MHz (which seems to be the highest I can clock it sad.gif). I loved this game so much when I was younger. I mean seriously. Wow. I love this thing.

And I'm getting used to the joystick tongue.gif
TKF15H
Now my GP2X just crashes on the green screen while booting. It also wobbles oddly, and graphical glitches are visible, despite the scratched-up screen protector it came with.

DrMDx:
Tested, was working fine for a while, crashed. I think I toasted the batteries already. XD

gnuboy:
Does it play full speed? There's only one game I really liked on the GB, and that was Motocross Madness. I think I'll install this when I get a pair of rechargables.

squidgesnes:
This one displays some text and crashes, with a wobbly screen. I was looking forward to Rock'n'Roll Racing and MK3. sad.gif

squidgeNgine:
dunno any games for this one, what are they like?

gp2psx:
This one will definitly be worth a try, I really want to see how Dead Or Alive plays on it. I don't expect to be able to play it, but I want to see it anyway! tongue.gif

mame:
I can't think of any games I'd really like to play for it. All the ones I can think of also exist for the Genesis.

I've played the SDL Sopwith c.a.m.e.l. thing, had loads of fun with it. I then got Quake and finished the first level. When I was about to save the game I accidentally selected "New Game" and lost it all. :'(

ps: I'm kidding about the scratched-up screen protector, I took the plastic thingy off and it looks fine. And the crash on boot is 99% likely to be because the batteries are now R.I.P. wink.gif

[edit] How come when I type "c amel" (without the space) it becomes "moron"??? o_O

Just got mine. Got the power adaptor. Didn't read close enough to see it wasn't a US-style plug. Fortunately I'm well-stocked in AA's tonight -- I'll wander around to see if I can find a plug adapter tomorrow.

I just got my replacement because mine had the firmware crap out. in mid-December, I paid full for the pre-order in October.

I am really really pleased with it so far (again), I like the TV-Out, it is so awesome. Just playing DrMD and GnuBoy on half a TV screen (the top and left halves, respectively) gives me great hope for the GP2X one day being a great console.

Thanks to gp32z.com for replacing my unit free of charge.

People who complain about the new ones really don't have it rough, I have a new one now and let me tell you the pre-order ones had much worse build quality.

I didn't have to scrape the white stuff off these terminals, they are completely shiny. Funnily enough the LED holes on the front really are white on the newer ones. I like it because it distracts me from the fact the LEDs are still being assembled into the GP2X's wrong (pushed back into the case).

My brother (who loves his GBA SP) likes the GP2X because it has a headphones plug, take that Nintendo, we don't have to buy a stupid adaptor to use the handheld as god intended.

after nearly a month of waiting for my 24/48 hour shipping I GOT MINE!

ive been a video game console collector for about 10 years now, got a massive collection everything from vectrex to saturns, and i love each one. trouble was, couldnt carry em all with me.

reading my imported copy of Retro Gamer, and BAM! an advert for the GB32!!!
check the link, damn the things been discontinued...but what ho! o frabjoyous day hallooo!! GP2x get out of my dreams and into my car.

arrived, took me about 3 hours to figure the damn thing out before i got quake working. had to loosen the joystick, im already considering the x-box mod.

went out and blew a lot of money on a 1 gig SD card, and its already almost totally filled with my huge rom collection.

i gotta say, as much as i want the GP2x's makers to be rolling in dough for creating such a wonderful tool, i hope these dont catch on, i want to always be different from all the GBA and PSP sheep out there when i whip out my GP2x and start playing some FF5 or some Duke3D

Hi All, Seems like a great community here. smile.gif Got my GP2X a couple of days ago. OK- The stick aint great, but who cares! It works fine with C64 and Speccy games from my youth! (quite a long time ago now 'sniff' ) blink.gif Looking forward to seeing what this baby is capable of over the next few months, it has some great support from some very talented programmers. I also have a PSP, sure they will both be able to get along. Got fed-up with Sonys attempts to stop us homebrewing, so PSP for commercial and GP2X for Homebrew. laugh.gif .

Great Service from GP2x.co.uk, Next day Special Delivery. If your interested. tongue.gif
