hiya

I came across this guide on engadget about using a ipod as a universal remote

However I dont have a PDA so I googled around I came across this link

http://www.codeproject.com/netcf/PocketBeamer.asp

Im no coder but got most of it this app seems to convert ir codes in the pronto format to a WAV file it looks like some strange WAV files it has a preamble that charges up a capacitor in Griffin Total Remote thingy that means no batteries needed when sending the signal.

I have no idea how to do this though I couldn't make head or tails the pocket pc app is written in C so it might be portable but i doubt it

any ideas on how else I could do this?

Nice idea, but my TV's remote has got more buttons than the GP2X already tongue.gif

Also it could get very annoying if you have a dodgy headphone jack that always plays through the speakers.

Useful for macros or IR light switches i suppose

This is pretty sweet. You could just make a bunch of wav's like one for off and one for on and channels and what not. But, how would you record the signal from the original remote? I understand how its sending but i dont understand how it would recieve?

LOL thats true about the dodgey jacks

But would still be useful to control different devices

It doesn't receive, afaik. If it could, this would have been a nice way of doing multi-player games.

Unless you're doing this for fun and as a project the easiest and probably cheapest way really is to buy a PDA. I bought two palm M100s (The simplest model that runs the remote software) off ebay in seperate auctions for under 30 pounds total. That was several months ago. They are problably going for even less now.

Combined with software like NoviRemote Classic You have a great cheap learning/database remote with a 30 foot range and the added bonus of a few palm games or an ebook reader for when there is nothing decent on TV smile.gif

I understand; it's the geek-factor of it ... heck, I still use my GP32 as a guitar tuner ... screw paying $40 for one in Guitar World laugh.gif

Yeah. The geek factor. Its that special feeling. Like when you have wires thrown over your shoulder, a camera in your hand, a mic in your ear, and who knows what in your mouth. People look at you like some type of robot. laugh.gif
