Hi!
I have found some great news on Emuholic

GP2X Coding Competition Results
GP2X News
Craig and myself have been busy judging all the entries and we came to the decision that the top 3 places go to the following:
1) Bubble Train - Fantastic port, shockingly addictive, just try it!
2) Vektar - Jeff Minter would be proud. Dreamy visuals and silky smooth blastem up gameplay.
3) GNUBoy - Best GBC emu on the GP2X now with all the options you could ask for, fast, great sound and wonderful compatibility.
I would also like to take the opportunity to thank everyone that participated in the competition. A 20 day deadline and 26 entries is a very good turnout especially with the GP2X being a fairly new console. You can check out the winners and the other entries via the compo results page here. Let us know what your favourite entries are on the forum!

I think efegea's should have won something, even though it isnt complete or w/e its what most people want
I also dont understand why a skin was accepted too since it isnt coding at all. Not bad ill be getting most of that stuff.

actually the results were mentioned in another thread but i'd say it deserves its own thread anyway.
congrats to the winners. so far i think my personal favorite is vektar. it has all those little finishing touches that make a great game. the new music and sound fx in ladykiller are great. and gnuboy2x is just perfect. i'm about to try out whacky.
regarding efegea's...i was intrigued but i wanted to make sure before i tried it that the program itself wasn't what bricked his gp2x!

i'm sure it wasn't though. i'll be trying it shortly. also, i should say that sdl2x looks great. once i get more into c++ i'll be trying it out.

wow, bubbletrain is 30 megs
GNUboy, last time i tried the sound compatability was not so great,
littleSoundDj was not playable ... i talked to K-teto about it a little, he said maybe someday the sound core could be re-coded but the task is large
anyway, awesome !!!! ... we need a :gp2x: smilie !!!

Vektar is just awseome! Its made the 26 day wait worthwhile alone for me.
Big pat on the back for everyone else too. Gnuboy will be getting a good run out when I get home from work today.

anyone tried gpgeneral? Whats it like?

I haven't played gpgeneral yet, but there are some problems with text.
It could be hardly noticeable, or it could be impossible to play.

wew. Vectar is really nice. I would have liked to see a more advanced version of Pulp Life. So far it is certainly a nice demo, lots of room for improvement here. Once the bugs are fixed I think it will be quite a nice game/engine.

In that case you REALLY need to check the new version out. This is one of several changes listed in the readme: "Perfect sound thanks to total elimination of SDL and use of the minilib for sound." And I agree - it sounds fantastic!
edit - I still haven't worked savestates out in it though.
edit edit - Ah! L+R to get to the menu, then Y to get to savestates, then A to save or B to load. A bit tricky, but it works.

It worked fine for me on theoddbot's firmware. I was unable to actually save a game (this was before I heard about the save states). It would be nice if everything was nicely documented somewhere (like the readme) instead of in scrolling text. Oh well.
So in short: saving in game doesn't work for me, though save states should.

you can either put your roms in the roms folder beneath the gnuboy executable, or roms/gameboy below the sd card root. then in gnuboy you hit select to get the settings menu and pick one or the other. the default is the first one.

How do you actually save a state? I can only get to, what I'm presuming, is the the load state screen... and it won't let me load since I haven't saved...
But yeah very impressed with most of the other entries. There are certainly some creative minds in the GP2X community.

Yep, I don't really plan to use it in the way you probably expected but it will be really useful. I will read through your example, see which of your functions it used, and then look at your functions to see what SDL functions they used. The joystick code has already really helped out just by reading it.
If you wanna know what you should improve in it, I will tell you once I have read it more thoroughly (sp?).

Thanks everybody for your kind comments about Vektar. I have a clear idea about what version 1.0 will actually be and I'll be releasing it shortly, depending on how long it takes me to solve certain technical problems. Most likely another two weeks or so.
Note that there is a bug in the competition version where if you play a second game without exiting first, you won't get free ships right away; I forgot to reset the "next free ship score" variable. Sorry about that; you need to exit and restart the program between games.
I thought there were a number of impressive entries:
BubbleTrain is great and a deserving victor.
Beat2X is a lot of fun!
I haven't seen much mention of Extraterrestres but I think it's a very solid and fun game; the artwork is really nice and the variety of options makes it interesting to keep playing.
Ladykiller has pretty interesting gameplay and is coded very well with a nice look.
Vanguard Wars gets pretty absorbing once you get the hang of it.
Radek's demo is very impressive. If he builds a game that makes good use of his blitting routines it could be really great.
GP General looks very promising but with the text being unreadable it's not really playable yet. If MiSaTo keeps working on it this will be a very popular game!
Pulplife has some fairly nifty graphics and a nice cinematic feel to it, but I haven't really got the hang of it yet.
Those are the only ones I have gotten to so far, but I'm looking forward to trying Blockrage2x, Whacky, Yahtzee, PokeParadox, and of course Goitfights.
I don't have any games for other consoles so I'm not really into emulators myself but from the look of it, Gnuboy2x was an impressive and important release.
What fun!

no--the problem is with the GNUboy sound code. kits and other high frequency stuff still don't work in LSDj. i agree the interface for the save states could be better, and some sort of visual map of the key-button-functions on each screen would be nice (rather than a slow ass ticker/scroller). but seriously, these are all niggles--the rom selector menu r0x and so many gb classix are fully playble! great work, much props!!!
on the other hand, marc just got a gp2x and has been working on porting
littleGpTracker to it. *hyped*
and yeah, vektar is a very fun play with all the exploding eye candy. the only thing it's missing is a way to skip the easier levels (i.e. start with so many points) ... things progress a bit slowly before the insanity sets in

QUOTE(From the Gnuboy2x readme)
Usage:
-----
Put your uncompressed roms in SD:/roms/gameboy or use the directory that gnuboy2x will create on startup.
Put your roms on the desired directory from these two.
Load the emulator, press Start and load a rom pressing b, easy.
To go to the options screen press SELECT.
To go to the savestates screen press Y.
If you exit to the rom selector with L+R you can go back to the game pressing L+R again or go back to startup screen pressing X.
LEFT moves 12 files back and RIGHT moves 12 files foward.
L+R are used commonly to exit menus or emulation, and to exit the program aswell when you are on the startup screen, to go there, press X on the file selector.

The gnuboy readme doesn't say that you need to press A to save or B to load a savestate. You have to wait for the (slow) scrolling message to tell you that.
What about SRAM saves? They don't seem to work for me. Should they?
edit - That sounds really negative - it's a great emulator, but I thought I remembered SRAM working in a previous version (may be a false memory though!)

Sram has been disabled for the moment, i don't want to have something that saves in the nand without control, but i'll add support for sram later, saving on the sd of course.
Nickspoon, theoddbot's firmware seems to have some problems with some apps, that may be beacuse the filesystem is read only or something like that, i can't use his firmware, but i'll look for a solution.

It created a directory called .gnuboy in the root of my SD card. Doesn't answer your problem, but maybe that answers the 'was it trying to write to the NAND?' question.

Feb 26 2006, 06:54 PM
I hope you're not trying to write .gnuboy to NAND (you appear to be writing it to /)
barnesy: It is writing .gnuboy to NAND, and failing due to the read-only filesystem.
