I was following the release of the GP2X a few months ago, needless to say the release condition of the product was unacceptable. So are the problems with the headphone jack, broken joystick, and messed up screen taken care of? Thanks.
theoddbot
There's been no hardware changes and probably won't be until around christmas, except maybe a new joystick knob.
craigix
xzen, have you actually seen a gp2x? Or did you base everything on what your read on boards?

... if you've read things here, you'd know the answer to your questions. dry.gif

Maybe this video will change your 100% mental picture of the GP2X.

Do you guys think they'll just change the knob? Why not go in and put in a "GP32" clickety-clackety stick? I'd buy another one instantly! biggrin.gif

Thx for video link. I have wanted to ask about the general state of the GP2X myself. This is a good place for info, but one tends to only pick up the bad things about the GP2X. It's hard to get an overall picture. Still I am very tempted to buy one, especially since the development of MAME on the GP32 seems to have come to an halt...
lubidog
It isn't totally unacceptable. Mine (up to now) has had no problems and given me nothing but enormous pleasure.

Hey, I've had four months of joy that you will never have had! Nernernernerneeeerrrhhh!

taras
Same here, it's a great unit, had no problems at all with it and lots of TETRIS FUN!
Jester
I've had mine about 2 months and it's been perfect so far *touches wood*. It's given me nothing but entertainment and i'm very very happy with it, completely worth it's fairly low price tag. biggrin.gif

Some of the "first edition" units had some problems with the headphone socket and a slightly flickering screen. Later production line donīt have those issues anymore.
ingrin
My first unit arrived defective (wouldn't power up unless plugged into the wall with an AC adapter.) The retailer was great about the return, and have had no issues with my new one, even after 2 falls > 4 feet on a hard floor... Well, I had to bend the Battery contacts back out, but after that, worked fine.
xzen54321
Ok thanks, so all the things im thinking about are related to the first editions.

I'd be the first to recommend the gp2x, but there still seems to be the odd build quality issue. My non-first edition unit's headphone socket fell through into it today, which was a bit upsetting.

It hadn't ever been really right, only sometimes cutting sound to the main speakers when headphones were inserted, but having only used the socket five or six times, and carefully at that, I didn't expect it to pull this stunt!

Don't expect perfection, is all I'm saying. It's a great console, with a few issues that affect some units.
racoon
Well, a friend of mine had to solder my unit 2 times in the headphone-jacket area (once for headphone detectin, the other time for music) but well, all I can say is:

IT WAS WORTH IT smile.gif

It's a great unit, and if you really get a faulty unit return it and get a flawless one smile.gif.
RT2
I am getting one soon, can the headphone problem develop over time, like if the unit works fine at first can the headphones loosen up?

And if so whould i be acting paranoid to open the unit up and place some superglue around the headphone jack to secure it in place? or whould that just lead to more problems?
virusx
My headphone socket fell the first time I managed to plug my headphones mad.gif
If you're about to open your unit, I think you should put more solder on the 4 headphone jack's pins.
It will be better than "superglueing" everything on your board.

EDIT : I'm very happy of this handled btw laugh.gif

What about emulators? I remember when I was interested before there were almost no stable emulators. Now I notice there is a Neo-Geo one. Anything else working stably?

Gameboy, Gameboy Colour, SNES, NES, Genesis/Megadrive, SMS/GG, PC-Engine all run fast enough for me to play them, if not full speed.

Hey, donate for me too, I have so far designed or helped in the design 3 useful hardware devices or mods EXT port related smile.gif.

I had to sell my GP2X on ebay to pay for school. I am not joking, check my posts and the archive and wiki.

I did the Samsung e810 Serial cable mod (parts cost $5), the TV-Out cable fix (cost free), and I gave away a good idea to techFreak*.

I can't design Micro Flat BoB mods without a GP2X, I want my design to use a flat ribbon cable and no huge plug, and hug the back so you can leave it on the GP2X all the time.

(*It doesn't really count because I mentioned the Idea last year before the GP2X release even, but if he uses it I can laugh and point at the people who thought my idea was dumb, especially if they think it is cool now because techFreak did it. laugh.gif The proof will be on the forums for all to see, go back to Dec and you can see who had the idea first and has proof tongue.gif)

Mine arrived on Saturday and the only annoyance is the flickering screen on the menu. It only occurs like once, and doesn't happen in any of the programs that I load. Is this problem normal?

Yeh Shaun, it happens on mine and is fairly common - Not really an issue though!

I got one of the Mk II machines with v2.0 firmware a few weeks ago and it works a treat - there are no problems whatsoever. I was sceptical because I had looked on forums like this and heard complaints but many of the complaints related to OLD editions and OLD firmwares. I can tell you that the current state of the GP2X is decent and if you are thinking of getting hold of one you won't be disappointed.

I was nearly put off buying mine because of some negative comments I found but when I realised most of the posts were really old and the problems with earlier models seemed to have been corrected I went ahead and bought it and I'm glad I did.

I have a PSP too and although its great for 3D games it is a real hassle to get emulators running on it (2.5firmware + GTA exploit) I already bricked it once trying to go to v1.5 firmware. The unit itself is also quite heavy compared to the 2X and the battery life is poor by comparison. Definitely get a 2X if you are thinking about it and preferably a 4Gb SD card too (I recommend Transcend 150x 4Gb) smile.gif
