Gpx2 has been delivered and is awaiting me at the post office. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow morining.
So dilema time, what should I do first?
Load up the new 1.4 Firmware?
Get MAME running?
Put some divx stuff on it?
I need to pop out tomorrow and get some rechargable batteries, sd card reader and a power supply, but ARGOS looks good to go.
The guys at work want to see this and I need to impress.
Any ideas?

You're so excited, that you forgot the exclamation mark ... and you posted in the wrong forum .. and it's GP2X, not GPX2

Welcome to the forum

There are many Über-impressive emus; DrMDx, MAME, FishyNES, M.E.S.S., Stella, Atari 800, C64, GNUboy ... bah! I can't even list them all ... just browse the archive and try 'em all out

As for upgrading the FW, read through some of the topics here (do a search on firmware) ... many differing points of view

Enjoy your new toy

The most impressive things are probably MAME, DrMD, GNUBoy. Video output is also very impressive if you have any avi files handy that are compatible (you can't really tell if they are compatible or not until you give them a try).
My personal favourate is GP2XPectrum (a Sinclair ZX Spectrum emulator) but as this is an emulator of a machine from 1982 it is not particularly impressive to most, but great if you were ever a Spectrum owner.
You should also take a look at Tilematch (a alick and highly addictive puzzle game).
Updating your firmware isn't always as easy as it should be, so you may want to wait a while and read up on it before you try.

I suggest you to upgrade your firmware AFTER having impressed your workmates.
It will be ambarassing to brick your new Gp2X in front of them !
You should begin by the end of your topic
1- Buy batteries, Sd card reader and power supply. (a Sd card perhaps

)
2- Put some emus (Mame DrMDx and Neo-geo are the most impressives I think) on it, some roms, a short film.
3-Impress them !

EDIT : And don't forget to put some homebrews too, there plenty of them that are impressive. (Vektar is my favorit).

GnGeo, DrMD, or Beat2x... one of those will surely impress people.

Thanks for the response, never had such a nice reception before.
I have a 1gig sd card so I shall load it up.
The spectrum emulator sounds so good, I spent my early years wasting time in front of one of those babies. Jetpac, Manic Miner drool.
Next the C64, my fav game on that was park patrol, then paradriod.
Not to mention Pac man, ghost and goblins (assuming it works)...
thanks.

Won't the firmware already be 1.4 if it's a new unit?

Not if he bought from GBAX. I got min Monday and it was 1.2.1 - was pretty disappointed. Wanted 1.4, but don't want to risk bricking my shiny new GP2X.

I think It's very likely.
to sinkyboy2000:
It seems quite safe to flash firmare these days. I flashed 1.2.1 and 1.4 and 1.4 cramfs without any problems.

Sadly Manic Miner is the only Spectrum game I have found problems with so far as it runs too fast.
C64 emulation is excellent through Frodo, and Pac Man and Ghosts and Goblins both run full speed with great sound. Take a look
here for a partial compatibility staus list.

There is no need to be worried. Bricking your unit from flashing the kernel is quite easily fixed.

it is? so your saying a bricked gp2x isn't useless, it can be fixed? add one more tick to why gp2x rocks your world!

if you screw up your firmware, but you still have your u-boot (screen that pops up before the green loading screen) then you can just install a firmware again and it will work fine.
If you screw up your u-boot, well, then, you have a brick

You can fix this with a JTAG cable, but not everyone has one of those. GPH's u-boot has this automatic update "feature" that has left some people with bricks, so art103 made an alternative u-boot in which you have to specifically select "update firmware" for it to update. This will probably be installed on gp2x's in the future to avoid any more problems with GPH's brilliant "feature".

Mine arrived a week ago, with 1.2.1 I upgraded it to 1.4 with the OFFICIAL upgrade - works great, took only several seconds to do the update...

1)Get recharge batterys first
2) Read the new manual in the files area!
3)DRMD
4)gngeo
5) Install a new skin
6) Leave 1.4 for a few weeks until you are happy with the machine and the process. No point killing it by accident on day one.
Got mine 1 month back its still on 1.2.1, loving gngeo!

I personally find that Mame 1.9 is better than Gngeo, because it can run NeoGeo games at full power (233Mhz, sound 100%), whereas Gngeo has some blips. The only advantage I see of Gngeo (at least at the moment) is that Mame only plays romset .34 which means a couple of games, like Pop 'n' Bounce, won't work (needs Mame .35rc1 compatability). Mame 1.9 is awesome!

Really? I found Metal Slug and every other NeoGeo game much faster and smoother with GNgeo over Mame 1.9 (not to knock Mame, its AWESOME). I could also overclock to 266 as necesssary in GNgeo, whereas Mame 1.9 games would freeze. Thats probably a limitation of my unit though.
Are you using the most recent version of GNgeo?

Thanks for the responses.
I've finally got an SD reader and some bats.
Loaded up DrMd and sonic, wow it just blew me away.
I tried some AVI files and WMA but they refused to play, which video formats work on 1.2.1 firmware?

DivX/XviD with either MP3 or OGG audio (rename .ogm to .avi)
