When I got my gp2x the joystick was pretty responsive. Then suddenly it became horrible. After a while, it became good again. I thought the joystick was broken but it was actually the cap. the cap was able to go too deep and make the cap hit the side before the joystick could register it. Here's a crappy diagram of my joystick made in paint in about a minute.



in the second picture it registers a direction. but if I push the cap down more, it hits the side makeing the joystick stop before it can register. Does anyone know of a way to fix this? What can i put inside the joystick hole? I also noticed that if you pull off the cap, the stick is a half circle. Why didnt they utilize this for the proper height? the hole is just a circle. if it was half a circle, it would stop at the point where the stick becomes circular.

Yes , I think your joystick is too low.
You should try to put a little piece of plastic in your cap in order to make it higher.
According to the DaveC sheet, the distance between the cap and the Gp2X should be about 5mm .

EDIT : it's the distance between the border of the cap (once pushed in a direction), and the Gp2X.

Yes it's written "about .5 mm" , but of course, I think it's about 5Mm.

That means the joystick must be 5000 km long to work properly?

Except if you plan to make the biggest Gp2X cap ever !

It should be .5 mm (1/2 a mm). 5mm would be WAY to much. If it is 5mm after installation it is installed wrong.

actually, what I wanted to know is what exactly I should actually put in the cap. I dont know what to stick in there. It should have been built in a way that I shouldnt need to do this. But oh well.

Is your cap moving a lot on the joystick ?
If not, you could put a little piece of plastic (in the cap's hole) or whatever in order to have it a little bit higher (as I said in my first post).

The general consensus is that the best fix for this particular joystick height problem is to drip melted candle wax down the hole. Once it sets, it moulds perfectly and any excess wax can easily be scraped away.

Be liberal. Use a whole candle. Let the wax drip, don't worry if it overflows.

It might even be 5Mm!
