Now with a range on offer I thought it might be a good idea to get a snapshot of people's preferences. Not only out of interest but as info for people considering their options....

MK1 Cap, because I haven't tried any others!
SnipaMasta
The MK1 cap wasn't very nice, although I put up with it until I saw the MK2 cap thing, so I bought one of those. It's far better than the MK1 and I won't even bother looking at others.

Who cares about the cap, it only matters as long as the joystick lasts, and the joystick is a piece of crap. I am serious, read the product brief on the joystick, it is not designed for gaming.

When your joystick (those bits of metal and plastic you shove the cap onto) dies, what do you plan on doing?

If it is sending it back for another crap joystick to be soldered in then you are SOL.

In order of best to worst, a poll really doesn't help me here wink.gif:

1) Radek's circuit with Ngage QD or GameCube D-Pad mod: Closer To The Final Replacement Of Stick

2) DaveC's Cap

3) Craig's Cap

4) MK II Stock Cap

5) Modified N64 cap

6) Modified Interact PS1 cap

i feel that craigs cap is the best so far. I haven't tried the new MKII cap, though (me having an MKI).
the craig-cap sticks out more, making it easier to push it left/right. Sure, it looks cheap, but it plays better than DaveCs cap, which looks better but doesn't play as well

See above, source herring, revel in awesome control of Ecco the dolphin emulator until he eats the herring. smile.gif

or just get a deceased parrot and play until he crosses over to the other side. biggrin.gif

You need to do something about your cap though, it is really bad.

You could always pull out the cap more on any of them. Being longer makes the throw distance and dead zone worse though making the control sloppier and less precise.
Horscht
yeah, but that doesn't make it too comfortable wink.gif
nickspoon
DaveC's is by far the best I've tried. My only quip was that I couldn't hit left/right well, but a piece of paper in the hole soon sorted that.
sausage dog
Craigs cap did the trick. A bargain too.
Godmil
I've only tried the new mk2 (with 'gp2x' written on it). I just noticed today that for left/right/up movements I use the pad of my thumb, but to pull down I have to use the tip, just noticed I'm developing a callus on my thumb tip with is :/
Anyone else notice this, or am I just crap at using a joystick smile.gif

Thats not the mk2 cap, it is the craigx one.

I have tried them all and DaveC's is the best imo.
PSyMastR
DaveC's FTW!
White Demon
Um, what's the difference between the mk2 cap ang Craig's cap? I thought they were the same.
daclassicgamingmaster
i like craigs
lintsniffer
I have only used the MK2 one. It's fine for me.
WhiteFalcon
? > DaveC's > MK1
Paradox
DaveC's (only tried that and the original)

Though as nubie said..it doesnt matter when the joystick component itself is a piece of shit. Mines broken and i've only had it since December, and had to send it back to be fixed/whatever they will do to it. How long before the fixed one breaks, another few months?...
reallynotnick
I am getting a new new MKII stick so I will report back when I get itl.
Winterkid
Hmm.. Obviously in the case of complete stick failure, some kind of long-term solution is needed to replace it. Are there any places that specialize in HW rebuilds that might have some sort of decent stick replacement solution?
triton
well i have used the stock cap and my n64 superpad cap and i say the superpad cap is quite nice, i lost the stock cap and have to fix the superpad one so ive been using my gp2x quite regularly without a cap at all for a few months and have had no problems, its a wee bit tough to hit left and right accuratly but i can most of the time. im so hardcore! lol
thelamer
Just got Craigs cap and I am very dissapointed in it , I will be writing a review soon .
jerschwab
Do you have to have all of the caps to qualify to vote? If not, then it's really a meaningless poll isn't it? Sorry for the cynicism...
lintsniffer
eh you beat me to it.

I did ask which cap you "favoured" not which was "best". Given that, you could feasibly prefer using a piece of old chamois leather stuck on with bee's wax (that would count as a vote in "own or other mod" incidentally).

What with all things being subjective anyway, I'm sorry for your cynicism too.
ste_167
I've tried the Mk1, Mk2 and Craigx caps, and the Mk2 does the best job for me.
Azure
Uh, is anybody else's MK2 stick INCREDIBLY tight? This is the tightest joystick I've ever used and thus the aboslute worst EVER (Joysticks shouldn't be this tight). It requires a lot of force from the thumb to move it around, definetly NOTHING like the GP32's stick (Which was nice and loose). I'm guessing none of these caps will make the stick looser, right? That's the only problem I have with the MK2 stick, it's too freaking tight and really hard to move quickly (I have to generally move it from the outer edges towards the direction I want to move the stick, instead of being able to rest my thumb in the middle and move my thumb around).
ste_167
I'm imagining it will loosen over time. I do the same 'outer edge' technique too.. it feels as if your thumb would slip off if you moved it from the middle.

For what it's worth, I didn't think the GP32's stick was over precise for diagonals, the PSP's was horrendous, the DS knacks your hands after a short while and, slightly less related.., traditional joysticks (for your Amiga etc) were a right bugger at times. We've been spoilt by Playstation and Gamecube controllers, people weren't even happy with the Xbox's which in reality is a pretty solid controller.
Azure
I don't think it'll loosen over time to help solve this problem. It's WAY too tight and requires a lot of effort from my thumb to constantly move it around. I'm guessing none of the caps help solve this problem?
Digitalrat
Azure: Craig's cap helps to solve this problem a bit because it is higher.
erikthecat
i like NO CAP at all.
once the left thumb gets over the pressure issues:)
it's better than any of the caps,
try it, you will agree:)
regards,
GaRy:)
