My GP2X has just arrived.
Is it safe to put in/take out SD cards when switched on or should I always power off before swapping them?

You can change them anytime you want.
Just wait long enough after the last write to the SD Card after you remove it.
Also, sometimes the gp2x doesn't recognize the change. Nothing serious happens, though.
