im a huge game collector, and despite the fact that most homebrew stuff will work on the 2x, i originally got into the 2x from seeing ads for the 32. would it be worth tracking down a GP32?

You can buy mine if you want

It's a NLU which is overclockable to at least 256Mhz (pretty rare).
Send me a PM if interested (but I will be away for 4 weeks starting next week).

DUDE!!! My BLU can only get to 180mhz, and that's even after I voltmodded it!

Ok, relax, he said that it was overclockable to at least 256 Mhz, but, he didn't say that it could survive ( that's the rare part )

Well, mine does manage 230MHz stably (as in for an hour on the benchmark proggy), and may go higher (but I never wanted to risk it - 230 is insane as it is!).
To answer the question, though, it depends why you want it. If you want it purely as a collector's item and a piece of gaming history, then go for it. If you're after additional functionality, then no. The GP2x does *most* of what the GP32 does emu-wise, and, typically, does it better - so if you're looking to get more portable emulation goodness, then probably not. Except that the GP32 does have slightly longer battery life.
It does, however, also have some games that are unique to it - there's a few commercial games, and rather a significant quantity of homebrew that - so far - hasn't made it to the 2x. It probably will eventually, but not yet. So in that sense it might be worth it.
I would, however, think it too pricey for what you'd be getting in terms of functionality. I'd not sell my GP32 for the world, but that's more because of sentimental reasons than because I'll use it much in the next few years...

If you're a collector, i'd recommend buying one for some of the great gp32 only homebrew like lacuna, for example... or Blue Angelo, a commercial game that I think you can still get at gp32z.com
I'd have to recommend a BLU unit though... mine goes up to 166MHz, works great for everything.
Anyway, if you're a game collector and you love your GP2x, wouldn't the original GP32 look really nice in your collection next to the GP2x?

I never owned the GP32. It does look like (from pictures) that it has a pretty decent joypad. How does it feel when playing games?

They GP32 joystick is ages ahead the 2X's, that's for sure :] Too bad it has a bothersome clicking noise.

The GP32 stick has it's fair share of problems too, but atleast it doesn't have the annoying deadzone of the Gp2x stick.
Concerning the 256Mhz (not voltagemodded btw. I never opened my Gp32):
the NLU (non lit units) are known to overclock better than the other versions, and mine runs stable at that speed for hours in DrMD (only the SNES emu seems to stress the memory more, thus I can only overclock to 247Mhz with that emulator).

no complaints about the GP32 joypad. it takes a little getting used to but it always has felt just fine, really..

Don't get a GP32 if you've just gotten a '2X. You'll just feel bad that you spent all that money on the 2X, which is in many ways the inferior product.

As you are a collector then your collection will never be complete if you don't get one. Get a BLU if you can.
Some joypads did have a problem with diagonals but I think that must have been sorted by the time the BLU arrived. I have a BLU and a BLU+ and have never had a problem with either one.
The BLU+ has a hardware glitch where it echoes the top line at the bottom of the screen. It does not affect too many games as the top line is often not used or the devs have programmed around it. In its favour it does seem to run noticibly faster (at the same clockspeed setting) than any other model of GP32. I have only been able to test 3 different BLU+ units against my BLU and a friend's FLU so it may not be conclusive. Since most apps use the system timer it probably has no advantage to the end user.
However I think the straight BLU would be your best bet. You will never regret it.

You can't say things like that. You will end up with JaqMs - on peoples ignore list.
