Since my iPod has a broken display since a while and the Cradle of my IceLink (that's an adaptor to connect the iPod to a Sony CD/MD-Changer Car Radio) is also broken, I thought it's time to build something new to be able to listen to some music again smile.gif

Sooo I built the following:

IPB Image

Cute, isn't it?

Works the following way:

First, a small piece of metal on the battery cover of the gp2x:

IPB Image

Because that metal is part of that universal mobile phone car mount kit:

(Here is that pic in big)

One problem I had:
The gp2x needs stabilized 3 Volts.
A car battery voltage output ranges from 8 Volt (ignition) up until 14 Volts (when the battery is charging).
So I built a small circuit:

Nothing big, parts did cost 5 - 6 Euro. It stabilizes the current to exactly 3 Volts, works up until 1,5A (which is more than enough for the gp2x)
It works pretty well - in fact, it works THAT well, that I can start my car while the gp2x is running - and the gp2x doesn't crash nor even flicker.

Sound output for goes back into the IceLink, since I don't have a car radio with AUX Input (and the IceLink simulates a CD / MD - Changer)

Since IceLink also offers a serial protocol using the Apple Accessory Protocol, I could use my car radio to change the tracks on the gp2x if anybody codes that protocol into the gp2x wink.gif

That's it smile.gif

Here's another, last picture:

(Also available in big here

Heh, now I've got a car radio that can play movies, MP3s, SIDs, SPCs, MODs, etc smile.gif

Cute smile.gif

A really nice new use for the gp2x, this way you can play games when waiting in lines aswell tongue.gif

Now to connect a GPS to it and you will have the ultimate car accessory biggrin.gif

Oh, and nice car dude!
Tobriand
For MP3s it's a brilliant idea. Not so sure about movies though...

Incredibly stylish bit od design regardless - very nice little mod. Now you just need to use the ext port to add some buttons on the side of the steering wheel.

Cool. Is that an Opel? The Speedster is my 2nd favorite car of all time. biggrin.gif

Oh, pretty useful if you've got a long drive and another person sitting beneath you smile.gif

That is so cool nice work

Now that is the work of a true PIMP. I love it. Nice clean mounting job. Do you have it hooked up to an FM transmitter? I can't imagine listening to the 2X speakers in a car.

dry.gif No, the work of a true pimp is a beaten, drug-addicted, victimized homeless female prostitute. I hate the mis-use of this word by the MTV-saturated pop-culture sheep with no individuality.

ED made a car mount for his GP2X, and a nice one at that smile.gif Also, many, many points for owning an Opal. Nice job!

Well, in the sense of the "pimp my ride" spirit it is the work of a pimp. I rarely watch t.v. but I have seen a few episodes. You also forget pimps are well known for their sense of style and expression. A true pimp would have something similar in his ride so that he may "sip drank", smoke, and impress potential customers all while wearing an expensive suit, hat, scarf combo from the mid-70's.
clarky2o2o
wow soon it be EvilDragon Industries.
DemonStar55
that is awesome, good job!
Ranma13
Nice job, now we just need a decent MP3 player that supports subfolders.

Nope, much better smile.gif
It's connected to the MD / CD Changer Audio Input, best quality possible smile.gif
Sounds absolutely brilliant via the car speakers smile.gif

Now that is one cool mod... Wonder if the wife would let me do that to our Ford Escort smile.gif

Tell her you're gonna port tom-tom software to it 'later'...

My car speakers are so lousy that I managed to blow out the two back ones using a Durabrand stereo (yes, that's Wal-Mart's cheapo brand).

My brother has been building his in car entertainment system over the past few months. Its got:

- 5 LCD screens (2xsun visor, 1xsmall screen where the clock used to be and 2x head rest)
- Pioneer CD/DVD etc player
- Dolby 5.1 speaker system + extra speakers for music
- an in car freeview receiver (digital TV for those outside UK)
- two wireless video cameras (1x at front and 1x back of car, plugs upto LCDs)
- Ipod with connector to control via the Pioneer player
- Xbox
- Probably some other stuff, hes got so many boxes cant remember it all smile.gif

I was going to plug up the GP2X to it but the TV cable I bought was broke so I returned it. I will probably try it again when a cased Bob is released.

I cant do any photos yet as my brother is still building it all up (he took it apart and restarted a few weeks ago), currently there is no dashboard in the car smile.gif When he had the first setup it was quite cool, was watching The Business when driving around central london with the roof down and had loads of people trying to get in the car to watch the film, it was like a mobile cinema smile.gif
tim0391
love the mod great work biggrin.gif do you think this could power a gp2x in a car

this is from
[url=http://www.dansdata.com[/url]

Car moron lighter sockets are an excellent source of reasonably high current 12 volt power.

You can't suck the full continuous current capacity of the car battery out of them - that'd be an easy hundred amps, as various people whose auto electrical adventures have started fires behind their dashboards can testify - but as I discovered when I wrote a review a while ago, an ordinary moron lighter can be expected to draw around eight amps at 12 volts. The moron lighter's fuse will pass a fair bit more than that.

You should therefore have no trouble running loads of well over a hundred watts from a moron lighter socket. The 2.5 watts that a USB port can output is nothing at all by comparison.

Add to this a simple, modern, cheap DC to DC converter to drop 12 volts to USB's 5V, and the creation of a device like this...
