Fairly nice ad. I like it because it makes me want to find out more. Its not in depth and leaves me curious.
Ranma13
It's a nice, clean design, but from what I know about marketing, it has some issues:

1. The GP2X is shown in an angle that is bowing down rather than reflecting up. This gives people the mental idea that the device is either falling down or 'shy' to show itself off.

2. Unfortunately, all of the text is just 'market speak'. There's no real concrete "This device does THIS!" that really stands out.

3. The text has nothing to do with the picture. What I mean by this is that it says "Get ready for a revolution in the palm of your hand." It doesn't show any pictures of how the GP2X is 'revolutionary' and it doesn't show any pictures of the device in anyone's hands.

Just my take on it. Don't flog me if you disagree.

Haha - yeah - I have no marketing experience what-so-ever, so really - thanks for pointing that stuff out. Due to lack of professional screenshots - I was at a loss of the angles I chose... and shooting my GP2X is hardly ideal, due to minor imperfections and smudges.

As for the text - I couldn't think of anything other than the cliche "this means jack" genre.

Thanks for your feedback. smile.gif

Here's an idea that I just came up with. What about having a bunch of old consoles at the top (possibly in sepia) and each one has an arrow pointing down to a GP2X with Sonic or some other game on the screen and a person holding it? And then the text will be "Take your old classics... and put them in your hands."
Epicenter
It might be iffy territory to weigh so heavily on emulation in the ads. Maybe market it more as a do-everything device. In fact, that doesn't seem like a bad slogan ..

How about this text. May need some tweaking ...
"This changes EVERYTHING.
- Watch Video..
(caption: Your favorite movies, TV shows, downloaded or original video.
- Listen to Music..
(caption: Any songs you like, with complete freedom.)
- Play Classic or New and Original Games..
(caption: Or develop your own games and share them with the world.)
- Read E-Books..
(caption: Or store and view any text you choose.)

Do EVERYTHING. With the GP2X. Learn more at http://www.gp2x.co.uk"

They can find out by the news posts there everything you do with the machine, emulation included. Just an idea.

Playstation might not be a good one to include yet, but other than that, I like the 2nd one. Also, the megadrive was called sega genesis in america, so maybe "Sega Megadrive / Genesis" would be a good way to phrase that.

Im no expert on law but im pretty sure youve broken every single copyright law on the planet tongue.gif and you WOULD get sued by some of them for not having trademarks "i.e SONY" "playstation ™ Super...Nintendo TM etc etc.

yes if u look at the UK advert it says QUAKE at the bottom but its not quake its GPL (General Public licence) Quake so they can sort of get away with it.

WWE Inc is the best example if you look at wrestlers there ALL trademarked.

please note ive been up for 48 hours and quite drunk.
Vollgasasi
i really like this second advert. it's like

''what is that list...lets see genesis, super nes, play...station WTF - what's that on the right side? a gameboy - no wait a gp2x... and it plays all those systems... and it plays music and movies and stuff.. where can i get it ... gp2x.co.uk (checking website) woah there are pictures of it and a movie of it in action - hey and theres a link where i can buy it - let's do it!''

no seriously you will get in conflict with copyright law on 'normal' websites. BUT you know how i found out about the gp32? i saw a flash advert on sharereactor - a now closed file sharing page - and it advertised the gp32 as an emulating machine. so i think we should advertise on those websites with the full potential of the go2x (including names like nintendo and sony) and on websites like google video or such we should stck to a perfectly legal advertising method.

Can you say usb 2.0 ??? I though the USB port on the side was 1.1, so someone said a while ago, which is why its so slow. To get usb2.0 via the Bob is a bit of a cheat, remeber UK is tight on adverts being correct. Just need one busy boddy to bitch and you could be in trouble......

I know this for a fact. what your saying is called "viral" marketing. althought its been around for many years only recently big companies are using it. Viral is like "word of mouth" where a fact or gossip may spread about said product.

Microsoft used it for its "origami" project.

I advertise the gp2x at work by saying "it can do all this...and more" This comes under the Free speech act (why it effects the UK we dont know)

The usb out of the ext. port is 1.1 host, whereas the already there usb is usb 2.0 but not host...

Wait, what? How can that be if they're including USB 2.0 in the BOB which, as far as I know, connects to the EXT port? Are you sure you didn't swap those around?
nickspoon
Hooka is right. USB 2.0 Slave is provided to the USB port on the side by a Net-something chip, chosen by GPH over USB 1.1 host. USB 1.1 Host is wired to EXT.
Magnulus
So harddrives connected to the BOB will have USB 1.1 transfer rates? You wouldn't be able to watch movies through external drives then, would you?

Anyway, instead of "revolution in the palm of your hand" which sounds kind of dirty, you should go with "revolution in your trousers" to remove all as to whether it's dirty or not.

I don't know about including devices such as the Jaguar and the Playstation. We might end up getting some people who were expecting fullspeed on their games and will be disappointed. (Note the "Just for PSX" thread from recently)

EDIT: I was also thinking about this:

CODE

(Emulators)                         (Interpretors)
...                                     GPL Quake
...                   GP2x           Scummvm (Lucasarts/Sierra Games)
...              }   Image   {      Doom (PrBoom)
...                                       ...
...                                       ...

Maybe? I don't know if that would give the wrong idea about pirating old games, just my 2 cents.
jmetal88
My main issue with the ad is that it only directs readers to the UK distributor. If someone in the USA should see it, how are they to know that there is a distributor in California? If someone in continental Europe sees it, how are they to find EvilDragon's Germany shop to order it from? If someone living in Asia sees it, how are they to know that they can order it from Hong Kong shops like PlayAsia or Lik-Sang?
torpor
I have no problems - and by that, I mean *zero* problems - watching the tons of movies I've got on my USB1.1-compatible (its USB2.0) JOBO Datatank external hard disk connected to my GP2X. Every season of Futurama, 12 different full-length 'mainstream' movies, countless movie-files dl'ed from the 'net .. they all work seamlessly.

Don't discount the USB1.1 capabilities of the GP2X just coz its USB1.1 and not USB2.0 .. it still works great. No problems whatsoever.

Heh. Along those same lines, how about a line like:

"The second-best use for the palm of your hand."

I'd buy that.

Anyone up for renaming the GP2X "Fap"? Works for Nintendo.
Crazy Goat
I am quite aware I probably broke every copywrite law for each name - it's not like it's getting put in a magazine. laugh.gif I just needed something to keep me busy, because it was extremely bored at the time.... and as for that URL linking towards Craig's site - it was because he seems to be the only person looking for marketing... and if I was going to even bother fooling around... I might as well do something worthwhile.

As for the movies - if the bitrate is "low enough" it should play fine, finding the threshold for such will be necessary - and will vary with the drive speed.

Haha Nickspoon, you reminded me of this. (Don't tell newgrounds I made a direct link or they'll eat me alive).
Aninhumer
I think perhaps a simpler one would be in order, I know we don't want to miss any emulator off but how about just MAME, Neo-Geo, Genesis, SNES, NES, SMS and Gameboy? You could even use pictures of the consoles.

Or perhaps something like the first one but with a bit better arrangement (angle, etc.)

EDIT: Don't forget to include "And [Many/Much] more"
