DRM as microsoft and apple see it is not very nice. I don't really want to pay for a device to support such codecs if I can avoid it.

Sure sell it separate for people that want it but it doesn't belong as part of a supposed open source device IMO.

A Gstreamer based player could probably be ported, but these are all-software binary blobs I would guess, and even then they might not offer ARM compatible. We'd need a blob that uses the hardware decoder chip and is compiled for ARM.
