Full Version: Is The Emulation Scene Dying?

well, i have been lookin around the emulators in the archive and i noticed that so many havent been updates for a year or so. like alot of the NES emulators, GBA, and a bunch of others. even alot of great applications, (too many to name) lol

alot of them showed promise and i have been hoping that alot will come back with more support added or bugs worked out.

just for an example, we dont really have a proper NES emulator yet. the one on the gp32 was perfect!

have alot of people given up? is the GP2X scene dwindling?

what do you guys think?

shinneri
Let's see--Picodrive was updated with Sega CD support. Reesy released DrPocketSNES. CPS2 emu was released a little while ago, and Zod is working on an interpreter for gpSP.

So no, I don't think it's dying. wink.gif
DaveC
I just think alot of people got busy with "real life".

There is stuff still going on. Alot of the older systems don't seem to be going anywhere like NES, PC-Engine, GB though. Who knows though a new NES emu could pop up tomorrow.

I was starting to miss these threads.

And GPFCE is not a "proper" emulator how...?

btw we also had recently Wonderswan emu and Watara Supervision.

¿Where do you have been?
¿Scene dying O_o?

Well, it does have its issues, though every emulator has them.

Yes, it could use some polish. I believe it's only TV-Out compatible when using the TV Fixer app. But it's still a very good and, I think, proper (whatever that means..) emulator; it plays Galaga like a dream. cool.gif

Polish, and a little fixing up of the more...Troublesome games for the NES. castlevania 3 and the like. That should do it.

I'd also like to see the button combinations fixed up a bit, but that's about it. Other than that it works, and it works well.

The sound could use a bit of clean up, and the need for overclock eliminated. It is decent but I would think NES could be better honestly. I would have thought by now we would have a more advanced NES emu. But we don't so this has to do.

True. I think it's just that...Well, every damn platform HAS an NES emulator already, including several handhelds. It gets to the point where even the most interested fellow eventually just...Runs out of stuff to play on the thing.

Compatibility is one problem gpfce doesn't suffer from. Every game I have tried works perfectly, including castlevania 3.

Overall, I am very optimistic we'll see some solid emu releases this year. A vastly improved GBA emu could be just around the corner as well.

Castlevania mostly works for me, but I do get some minor graphical glitches.

the big thing for me is gamepad support on my emulators. i use my BOB all the time. (oh, its so sweet with the cps2 emu!!!)

i just hope that the old system emu's arent forgotten. like nes, pcengine, and even gba.

also, i am pushing for a new updated nes emu with tv support and gamepad support. maybe play SMB1 or tetris head to head with my roomies. we are retrogamers. and i love the fact that the gp2x can play the older games.

its the big reason why i bought one.

Have you tried the TV Fixer app with GPFCE? It makes TV-Out display right (not all the time, but it does in this case). Sure, it's not as good as the emu natively supporting it, but it still works. wink.gif

Can some one please provide a link to this tv out app ?

xnopasaranx
maybe we should eventuallz make a list of all emus that need a little polishing and then have a look if we can do something for them ourselves. I am sure that it will be possible to improve a few things on our own if the devs have disappeared for a while.

I also think that there is loads that need finishing. On the other hand... all the new stuff is great and there is still emus being updated so I can't see the point about whining.
QuasaR
Mhmm, no GP32 user seemed to answered here so I just bring it back to light: F-Day!! I still believe, down in my little heart, that someday Ryleh will bring new joy to the GP32 and GP2X users with it's more than perfect emulators (just check the GB one on GP32...).
Till the I enjoy PicoDrive and SquidgeSNES... smile.gif

That's true, Rlyeh's GP32 emus are still among the best I've ever seen. He would make NES, GB and MSX perfect smile.gif

Well, just last month in Rlyeh's online interview he reaffirmed his intention to port his emulators to the GP2X.
And was quoted as saying that :

[quote]

"I believe 2007 will be the year of the GP2X".

[end quote]

I don't myself see any reason to believe that this will not be the case. wink.gif

We should remember that the GP2X is just over a year out of the gates; and I myself am amazed at what our clever coders have come up with so far! True some emulators could use a little polish here and there, but whining that the scene is dying just sounds like so much un-appreciation for all we have been given already.

just my 2 cents biggrin.gif

Here, here! I'm really hoping that one of the two big PCEngine EMUs will be updated soon - either HU6280 needs the sound fixed or gp2xengine needs to address the frame-skip, disappearing sprite issue, and it would be nice if Air Zonk ended up playable at the end of the day as well... I'm willing to donate to support a great EMU, but I don't know where my money should go when neither EMU's been updated in a 'coon's age... sad.gif

Yeah PC-Engine is a sad one. I really wish that had the interest of someone to make one good one and end it. There are 3 right now and each has their share of issues. 2 have sound problems and one is slow at reasonable clock speeds.

I think the perception by many is that (even Squidge said it) we have 3 PC-engine emus, why bother doing another?

My answer is basically because none of them run at full speed with full sound without overclocking to 280 MHz or more. Now many of us can't go past 240 MHz. Those that can will get lousy battery life.

I already donated for HU6280 as I thought that was going to be finished at the time. I would still be willing to donate again if one was finished. That would mean full speed, full and complete stereo sound, ninimum overclock (240 or less). Maybe a bounty could be put on PC Engine. I don't know how much of a motivator in reality that would be though. Real life still trumps all.
geise69
Man I would KILL for a near perfect working PC-Engine emulator with Super CD rom support. I thought that would happen before Sega CD emulation would. The one we have now that supports super cd rom is a tad slow and only accepts .WAV files as the audio tracks. I loved Vobbo's updates and wish he still had the time to work on it. It was turning out quite good...and fast.
kimini
You know, we (including GPH and craig) could pool together and hire a coder full time to work on things....

This is, of course, another plausible idea that will never happen. I'd just be happy with a decent video player.

shinneri
That might discourage free homebrew deving, I think, and that would end up hurting the community.
clean_sandwich
well folks, if we keep talking aobut it and we all want the old system emu's resurrected and touched up.

they are good emulators but just need some TLC. i was thinking of emailing the authors of the emu;s but i wouldnt know where to start.

but making a list of the emulators that need work, thats not a bad idea. i think it would maybe get that ball rolling again.

who wants to start it? probably make a new topic.

That smacks of harrasment; "Hi there. You don't know me, but your emu, while good, could use some work."

a little question is harassment?

bah, oh well. lets stay on topic

Your entire topic is harrasing. Learn to code, then YOU can improve these less-than-perfect FREE emulators.

... humanity's dying, that's for sure dry.gif

... really now? I think YOU're the one starting shit. Again, harrasing devs to improve their FREE work is rude, at the very least.

But feel free ... you can get their e-mail addresses usually within the readme of thier emu. laugh.gif

learn from yourself

attacking me here is harrassment. lol

but thats so sweet how you keep defending yourself. so come on, you wanna fight me here, go for it.

just shows how much control i have over ya. message me something else. call me a loser if you want.

you cant help but message me back can you?

that means i own you.

so come on, message me again.
