can i do it?

if so, what do i need?

and what emulators support 2 or 4 player thru usb?

cheers biggrin.gif
Vimacs
mame supports it, some other things as well probably.

You also need a way of connecting these controllers to the USB host interface on the EXT port (for example, a Break Out Board [aka Developer's Board]).
deepmenace
thanks Vim, vague but it's a start....your mind on other things i take it :-)

ok - so breakout board to usb hub to 4 joypads ? ? ?

edit - oh.... out of stock everywhere..../sulks/
deepmenace
oh, or the external powered hub + cable from http://www.artaylor.co.uk/gp2x/ ???

yeah?

anyone else know what emu's can use 2 or 4 usb pads?
Jaguarandine
Picodrive and the CPS2 emu I believe both support them.

dont suppose anyone knows if this'll work?

The drivers could be a problem.

My USB PS2 controller adaptor works fine... detects as a standard controller.
It's worth noting that my Adaptoid (N64 pad adaptor) and GameCube controller adaptor also work fine!

I wish more programs supported USB gaming smile.gif

It'd be fun to play Megadrive multiplayer at a friends house.

I'm all for this!

Ditto, my PS1 to USB works great smile.gif in Picodrive, and I expect http://www.retrousb.com/ stuff to work.

It's possible to make an adapter to use the usb and tvout at the same time?

See my sig.

If you do the USB like I show, just 3 more wires and you have TV-Out, then use the headphones jack with an RCA adaptor for audio-out.

In my sig the EXT out link will take you to a page with the wiring for the TV.

I didn't show it because you just need to hook ground to ground, and the Y and C pins from S-Video to the proper pins on the EXT connector.

Easy, cheesy. I will be getting a nice camera with macro soon (Fujifulm A330 $54 ebay smile.gif), so I can show pics of what I did. Just PM me and I will let you know when I get my camera.

I didn't want to make a new thread so I brought up this one on a simliar subject.

Would a usb multitap work with the gp2x? I think it would be cool to have original NES, Genesis, and SNES controllers work with no modification. Just the console-specific multitap (e.g., Team Player, Turbo Tap, etc) would be modded to function with usb. Are there drivers for something like this?

I've seen one example at www.retrousb.com (USB Four Score), but at $66 (not including shipping), I think they are really taking advantage of the situation.

I don't think so, unless it says so in the product description.

I would buy 4 of the $7 cheapie ones for N64 or PSX and use those with a hub, but then you are around the $50 level, if not more, they are just following the market.

Or this device (I love PSX pads though):

The Super Joybox 5 allows you to connect up to 4 PlayStation™ or PlayStation2™ controllers to your PC simultaneously. The Super Joybox 5 supports all buttons and is easy to install via USB port (just plug & play). The attached driver works for Windows 95, ME and 2000. Finally you can use your favourite PlayStation™ or PlayStation2™ controller for your PC gaming needs. The Super Joybox 5 is also ideal for emulation fans and game developers.

That would be a great option for PS1 games, but I'd like to use the original controllers for the emulators I play.

Sounds like this would be an interesting project. Any ideas on how to get started on something like this for the GP2X?

Maybe ask the devs if they are interested and get them a USB host to test their emulator with.

The real problem as I see it is that USB Host is right now in a caseless BoB version and is too expensive, otherwise it would be nice to get a donation set up to get them USB.
Jaguarandine
I think you're saying that USB multitaps/controllers won't work with a BoB or something to expose the USB host connection in the ExT port? That's an obstacle I wasn't really adressing in my previous posts. I figure the commercial BoB will take care of this or I could take the route you've shown in your sig and make my own.

What my main point is if having a USB host connection is solved, then I would like to use a USB multitap configuration (http://www.retrousb.com/images/fourscore1_large.jpg, but for USB instead of NES) as opposed to modding a controller to USB.

After doing some research on this subject for several hours, I was able to discover the following site that has made USB controllers and the process open source: http://www.zero-soft.com/HW/USB_NES/
Unfortunetly, no USB multitap is listed here, so it looks like Retrousb has the market cornered on such devices. It'd be nice to do this not only for NES multitaps, but for Genesis, SNES, TG-16 and other systems multitaps as well. This would be a difficult project currently beyond my ability, but very interesting.

I thought the whole point was total feasibility of USB, which is nil if you want software support to actually use your Gamepad. What I meant was that programs won't support it until the devs a reason to do it. They won't care unless everyone has it (them included), and that will never happen at the current rate.

As far as I know all you need is a USB hub and as many controllers as you want. SNES had 2 controllers, so get two USB to SNES adaptors. If you want it in a pretty case etc, then just put the Adaptors into your Bob and have gamepad connectors on the side of it.

The RetroUSB multi-tap is probably just a few of their USB hosts and a USB hub chip, you can do that yourself, seeing as how you need to make the USB a case (or make the USB adapter yourself) anyway.

I found a PSX multi-tap, can you name me any systems with 4 players? I don't really know of any off of the top of my head. I know the Genesis had some games with cartridges that had pad connectors on the side, but those are rare.

So all you need is two adaptors for whatever system you are doing, Atari/NES/SNES/Sega

PSX supports up to 9 players in games like Fifa, Snes takes four players in games like bomberman.

I know, but at $10 apiece for PSX to USB adaptors you are looking at $90 just for adaptors.

If you want to do it just do it. That was my whole point (AKA Genesis had 4-player too, yet I don't hear anyone complaining about that on the Genesis/MD emulators for any system).

There isn't support for USB gamepads in most of the emulators, and PSX doesn't run fast enough yet to even make it worthwile to play 9 player games.

USB hub + adapters + Emulator/Program that supports multi-player = 4 to 2 player on GP2X.
