Full Version: It's A Great Time To Be Back!

It's a great time to come back to the GP2X scene.

Apparently GBA emulation is not only possible, but really happening. When my GP2X joystick broke, folks still thought this was an impossible dream.

CPS2 emulation is apparently gotten so good you can run some games at 200MHz. I can't wait to try out Magic Sword again, heck, maybe Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom or Shadows of Mystaria will work. OMG, the link has the D&D title screen on it (jizzes self & feints).

There's this cool cradle which apparently can be had for less moola from Nubie's link; I'm guessing there's something in North America that does that too.

There's wireless Internet access, which is something I wanted since before I bought my GP2X. Who's going to arrest you for piggy-backing carrying that around?

EvilDragon is busy. Good to know.

Folks are making an open source Firmware for the GP2X! This could really help the device as it ages if it enables us to do more with our GP2X.

Maybe if I make a GP2X game I'll become famous enough for Hooka to interview me. *dreams*

There's a lot of homebrew to catch up on - and honestly, since I have an NDS and a G6 Lite, that's high on my list of priorities.

I can finally buy Payback. My joystick broke while I was playing the demo. It was xnopasaranx's wondering about me and Sam Fisher and PokeParadox getting back in contact with me that got me to reiterate my problem, which Grahf saw and PMed me offering to help.

If xnopasaranx hadn't written nicely about me, Pokeparadox never would have pointed me to the thread, and Grahf would never have seen my issue, and my GP2X would still be sitting next to my wife's MP3 player (when she's not using it). Thank you guys.

It's great to see Squidge is still here, Telcolou - I hear Epicenter left on bad terms and I'm saddened for that but such is the nature of humanity and the hardships of the world.

I've been having great fun in life - my kids are fantastically well behaved - my 10yo daughter cooks food, as in dinners. My 7yo daughter cooks scrambled eggs without making them too dry or soggy. My 2yo son scribbles on the wall in red permanent marker. Hey wait that's not good... oh he protects his sisters if I'm chastizing them. And my lovely Latina is STILL fun to chase around.

Welcome back Dave!

I hope you will be playing my game soon wink.gif

Off topic, but David-was that your review of Etrian Odyssey I just read on gamespot? About to play it for the first time due to your excellent review...(if it was you!)

Wow, uh yes it was me. I'm remarkably easy to track on teh interwebs, because I always use the same moniker. It's actually quite frightening. Just take out the space. Notably, I got banned from HardOCP because I posted a warning about three computer manufacturers who had terrible reviews yet folks threw them around as recommendations - not realizing one of them was a sponsor of HardOCP. I no longer respect them, their core is not hard, it's sold. Uhh I'm on dualscene.net, neverwinterconnections.com, googleearth, myfishtank.net (no longer have those fish, geez), Kotaku, Total Annihilation Universe... geez ha ha ha...

Okay, this one made me laugh: "Duh, how do I ally? - A Forum Post by DavidBeoulve"

Yep. I'm all over the place.

As for Etrian Odyssey, you must remember that that game tickles not only my nostalgia, but my artistic sense and most importantly, my need of freedom and sense of imagination. The class structure is well defined and appears balanced, though I have yet to beat Etrian Odyssey. The free-formedness is something I greatly enjoy, as most RPGs are myred down in stories I've read so many times before they bore me, or they're just dumb.

Well, see an early blog post I made before that review.
lubidog
Nice blog.

But this game just looks great! Really, I have playd more great games recently on the DS than on any modern platform for ages (!?!) This year alone there has been the second Pheonix Wright game, Puzzle Quest, Hotel 215, Picross and now this. Plus a cople more I can't remember!

And welcome back. You were missed and mentioned!

Oh, and Telcolou, I love The Crucible! Actually it really is good - both the color bricks and the design. It would have been easy to put together something... not awesome. And your wife is definitely a keeper.

Maria Alejandra's mom likes to say "There are two ways to a man's heart, and the second is through food!"

GP2X:
Okay, mayhaps it's bad to do this much reading before I have it back *chuckles*
TelcoLou
Thanks for the kind words smile.gif

The Crucible got its inspiration from this thread, thanks to Ruckage for the original 'seed'.

(And yes, my good lady Wife is indeed a keeper ... thank you ... it's nice to see another happily married dude on this forum biggrin.gif )

As for the Cult of Ed Wood™, check out this entertaining collection of posts wink.gif

If you want full speed GBA, the alternative, rather than emulation, is to make a BigBoy Advance - see my sig - just finished it - nice 5" screen!!

Haha, me too .... I even made some shockingly bad 3rd party units back in the day. (but I think I can forgive myself, as I would've been like 10 at the time) Hell, this just motivated me to check, and the page still exists. The spelling and grammar makes my eyes hurt. http://www.angelfire.com/clone/samnicholls/TA.html 3 of the downloads still work!
I recall I started work on another plane that was actually looking quite nice, but I don't think I ever finished it or uploaded it any place (I couldn't get it to animate like I wanted so gave up)... Maybe I should try again sometime, now that I'm no longer an idiot.... Hurrah for TA. smile.gif

anyway, nice to see you back with a working stick!

my wife has been monopolising the gp2x to play cloud master to death.

id rather she play cloudmaster than beat on me (she's 2 weeks from giving birth).. i think it best she abuse the gp2x with her preggy hormones than me wink.gif plus it means if it breaks she'll feel bad and we'll buy another gp2x!

Telcolou: The great thing about having four kids with a wife who breast feeds and wears steel bras to keep in shape? BEWBS!

YakumoFuji: Cloud Master?

reaper79, Parkydr: Congrats!

Yes I did. I meant it is much better to carry a real real GBA or DS lite than carrying around a machine at the size of a... C64? The screens on DS lite are good enough, as are the controls.
PokeParadox
Stop moaning... it's clearly a matter of personal preference. You prefer the standard GBA, Bacteria prefers a modded version with a larger screen... it's horses for courses.

Just installed a nice new x1650 gfx card to make Sup Com play better.
Sadly my machine now goes all "weird" after about 10 minutes...
Going to have to wait for that patch me thinks!

Still playing TA now and then?
Lobo
Welcome back Dave!

Latinas FTW: I'm also married to one wink.gif
David Beoulve
Lobo: Yes! I'm sure you're experienced with "Take your Latin Girlfriend to the Beach FTL!!!" Why? Because the white guy BURNS.

BenScar: Actually, with as horrible as Supreme Commander is, I probably will. Don't get me wrong - incredible game - if it would run well. Pharra is a...
  • E6700 Core Two Duo 2.66GHz CPU
  • Dual ATI X1900 XT's in Crossfire (512MB each)
  • Dual Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200RPM HD's in RAID 0 (speedy)
  • SWAP file on separate 7200RPM SATA drive (OS and Game is on the RAID 0 setup)
  • 2GB of RAM
  • Extreme Music Soundblaster Soundcard (hardware supported EAX and 5.1 surround sound)
And with this setup I can only run 2 AI plus myself comfortably with no slowdown ... that's 3 players, not even 4. HUH? When I first tried the game in 8 players (my usual trial by fire Skirmish match) I couldn't finish it.

PS - I was running TA:Spring, not original TA. That doesn't work on my computers tongue.gif

Clone: At least you were making Homebrew! I was making text adventure games in GWBASIC at that age. I'd discovered the PRINTF (locational print) statement a year later. The dark ages before teh interwebs and I had to learn BASIC from random old books I'd find in public schools. Yeah. That didn't work well.

Bacteria: I love your cool toy! I've always wished Nintendo would super-size the NDS tongue.gif

DEVELOPER UPDATE:
PokeParadox spent 2 hours with me chatting (on Teamspeak) about development and helping me set up devkitGP2X using CodeBlocks as a development environment. He worked on his project whilst I battled with getting CodeBlocks configured correctly and he helped me through some things.

And we still can't seem to get libraries linking properly... :S

WooT! Thanks to Grahf!

I'm also now a member of (a naughty site that contains roms) - they have some good stuff with nothing that would make me dislike them (like the full version of Payback).

Speaking of Payback I need to buy that! Woo!

I've updated my emulators.

Sad that Dzz and Vobbo are gone. Vobbo because he was an awesome coder, and likewise with Dzz, not to mention GP2Xgamer.com.

Anyone who's got comments, post 'em. I'll reply.

Added a blog entry which I linked.

Now I can easily move UP instead of UP RIGHT or UP RIGHT instead of UP - that alone is enough to make me sing.

Dennis, a mate at work, said "Whoa, yeah, you can feel the difference in the springyness from your old one."

I'm really happy with it - it's not as washy (loose) as before, but not resistant to being moved - it feels like a real, quality Dpad with a thumbstick on top. Actually, I believe that's what it is wink.gif

I need to ask Grahf what he took apart to put in there.

But yeah - NEO GEO, MAME, ... lordy Final Fight arcade machine! Wooo! It all controls great. GP2X's should come like this.

EDIT:
I ordered Payback!

Jeez. Just don't click on his topics if you don't want to read his posts. Or ignore him. He's not doing anything inappropriate.
David Beoulve
That was rude. I mean you don't even need to read this thread.

Weren't you one of the folks who asked about me while I was gone? Why be so rude?

Nevermind. Please don't post here. I'm not in the mood for spoiling the thread where I express how I feel great about being back in the community - unless it is your express purpose to make me feel unwelcome.

I see plenty of topics I think "Gee, that's silly." and I don't post in them.

To answer your questions:
  1. Among my real life friends few read every post, others catch what interests them - like you should be doing. Blogging is not about readership, it's about expression. To the human mind, it doesn't matter so much that what you write has the readership of Penny Arcade, it's cathartic to write.
  2. The reason I link to anything related to what I write about is explained in the article "Deep Linking is Good Linking". I copy posts because my wife doesn't like trying to navigate a forum, and because I understand 2 years after a post sometimes the thread is gone (not from here but I've had this happen).
This may or may not be the issue, but a lot of people have problems with my openness, they feel put off by it, it makes them uncomfortable. However, as I don't ask them to be less paranoid or closed in, wouldn't it be great if they didn't act like I should be like them?

But, like I said, I invite you to not reply here. I'm here to have some comraderie and feel good about being back. The whole reason I hate trying to connect with people on the Internet can be summed up in what you posted.
